3 Personal Branding Rules You Should Always Remember

Modeling legend and creator of America’s Next Top Model, Tyra Banks, has been teaching a class at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business for almost three years now.

What can a former supermodel possibly teach a class of business students at one of the nation’s most esteemed universities, you ask? Personal branding, of course!

The course teaches students how to “build and extend your personal brand.” It may seem strange for an institution like Stanford to hire a supermodel to teach a business course to graduate students, but there really is no one better for the job.

Tyra Banks has been building brands since the mere age of 13, and eventually making an empire. She runs multiple businesses, owns production studios, and recently launched ModelLand, which is an experience-centered venue that allows customers to live and feel like a model for a day.

Thanks to her knack for personal branding, Banks has proven that she’s a lot more than just a runway model. Her personal brand and charisma have given her career longevity.

Want to build a personal brand? Here are some personal branding rules you should always keep in mind:

1.    Remain Focused

To build a brand, you need focus. Sure, you may want to try new things and take on various opportunities, but your ability to focus on the task at hand will determine whether or not you find success in it.

Be aware of who your target market is and adjust your message accordingly. This will help you really hone in on a niche, and get it right.

2.    Be Authentic

The “fake it ‘til you make it” approach doesn’t work when people see right through you. When creating a personal brand, you have to be genuine. If you don’t know what’s going on or lack knowledge about something that’s being discussed, ask.

There’s nothing with showing humility; it lets others know that you’re aware of your shortcomings and are willing to learn from those who know better.

3.    Share Your Message

A large part of personal branding involves being vocal about your message and passion. Are there causes that you are passionate about? With social media, you have the perfect platform to spread the word and draw attention to yourself and your cause.
